When does a deck need a permit in Saskatoon?

The short answer

The City of Saskatoon currently states that a building permit is required for a deck higher than 200 mm (8 inches) above ground, for a deck larger than 2.32 square metres (25 square feet) and higher than 600 mm (24 inches), or whenever the deck has more than three risers.

Those thresholds are a starting point, not a complete project approval. The property’s zoning, the proposed location, structural details, utility locations, and other applicable requirements still need to be confirmed for the specific project.

What the City asks homeowners to prepare

The City directs applicants to confirm the property’s zoning designation and the development rules that apply to that zoning district.

The project agreement should identify whether PHC or the homeowner submits and pays for each required permit. The City determines which inspection stages apply. A permit, inspection, approval, or municipal timeline cannot be guaranteed by a contractor.

The City also instructs property owners and contractors to confirm utility locations before digging and to ensure the work complies with applicable building and zoning requirements.

Projects outside Saskatoon
